Internal Medicine physician or "Internists" specialize in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of adult diseases. An Internist can also help you to manage chronic conditions such as allergy/asthma, diabetes, cancer, heart related issues including high cholesterol and high blood pressure, infections, kidneys, digestive, respiratory conditions and more.
Internists are trained to diagnosis common as well as complex diseases and will utilize a multitude of screenings to optimize your health. Some of the more common procedures are listed below but your physician will consult with you to determine the best course of action.
Physicals — Annual Visits or Sports Physicals
Visiting your physician yearly to optimize your health is a great way to prevent health problems before they occur. Your physician can also discuss lifestyle choices that may influence your health and work with you to begin a plan toward improved health. Preventive Health can include health screenings and exams relevant to your age and risk factors, immunizations, flu shots, weight management, smoking cessation and overall health concerns. Sports physicals for clearance of high school and college athletes can be performed by appointment. Please bring the appropriate forms with you for completion by the physician and staff.
If you are suffering from heart related or respiratory symptoms, your physician may recommend a chest x-ray, which is a procedure used to evaluate organs and structures within the chest for symptoms of disease.
In addition to chest x-rays, your physician may conduct an EKG , a recording of the electrical activity of the heart, to help diagnose possible heart conditions.
Cardiac Stress Tests
Further analysis, through a Cardiac Stress test, may provide a more comprehensive view of your cardiac health. Utilizing a treadmill, your physician can compare your coronary circulation at rest with your circulation during maximum physical exertion.
Spirometry (Pulmonary function tests)
If you are suffering from upper respiratory symptoms, your physician may utilize spirometry which is the process of testing lung capacity.
Your physician may recommend your bone density be evaluated especially if you are postmenopausal. A bone density test, or scan, is designed to check for osteoporosis, a disease that occurs when the bones become thin and weak. A bone density scan measures the strength of an individual's bones and determines the risk of fracture.
Immunizations — Adult
Flu Shots, immunizations for travel outside the United States and the Shingles Vaccine may be available depending on supply. Please check with our office for availability and with your insurance company for reimbursement guidelines.
Prior to surgery, your physician may recommend a complete physical exam, chest x-ray and possibly a cardiac stress test to insure you are healthy and ready for the procedure.
Your insurance plan may require you to visit a primary care provider before a referral to a specialist for further evaluation of your health condition.
Your physician may recommend this procedure in the treatment of inflammatory joint conditions such as arthritis, tendinitis, bursitis and other conditions. With your consent, your physician will put a hypodermic needle into the affected joint delivering a dose of an anti-inflammatory agent.
Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
Over 68 million Americans suffer from high blood pressure, which can lead to serious conditions. Regular blood pressure testing is critical to optimum health. Our Internists will monitor your blood pressure and make physician referrals if needed. Through hormone testing, some high blood pressure conditions can be treated by adjusting hormone levels.
